The call for survivor voices, leadership and strategy in the fight against modern slavery
The Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner’s Strategic Plan and their offices’ work is underpinned by two core themes, the incorporation of survivor voices into policy design and, improving knowledge and understanding of modern slavery.
It is for this reason that since her appointment the Commissioner has been calling for the Government to establish a Survivor Advisory Council, and for the Government to draft a new modern slavery strategy. Only then can survivors' voices be heard; only then can tackling modern slavery be made everyone’s business with everyone understanding the part that they need to play.
Modern slavery is a horrific crime that has no place in the UK. Criminals target, exploit and destroy human life for profit, damaging lives, communities and society as a whole. This has to stop and it has to stop now. Ahead of Anti-Slavery Day IASC is re-iterating the call to the Government, to make modern slavery a priority, design a strategy that requires every part of government, and every part of the UK, to take action and play its part, and one that is most importantly informed by survivors themselves.
In this short clip, the Commissioner shares her reflections on this ahead of Anti-Slavery Day on 18 October.
